Cyan Worlds, the studio behind Myst, re-released its first game The Manhole for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad on Wednesday.
Manhole first debuted for the Macintosh in 1988. The game, designed by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller, is a modern take on Alice in Wonderland: Players follow a beanstalk down the titular manhole where they find a fantastical world to explore – one that feels a lot like the linking books that the Miller brothers created for their pivotal Myst series.
That’s because this new version of The Manhole delivers enhancements to imagery and music introduced in the “Masterpiece Edition” of the game released in 1995.
Its worth noting that The Manhole doesn’t have puzzles or even goals to waylay the player. The point of the game is to explore and have fun. (Kohler found the PC Engine version of the game in Japan a while back.)
Think of the game as a sandbox without all the carjacking.
