Orchestral arrangements of videogame music are not new — “Video Games Live” has certainly contributed to their current level of popularity — but no one as yet focused on one specific platform. Enter the C64 Orchestra.
Formed by conductor Bas Wiegers and the Dutch Ricciotti ensemble, the orchestra gives music from select Commodore 64 titles that classical touch. The project even has them collaborating with two original composers from that era — Rob Hubbard and Jeroen Tel — to create the new arrangements.
It’s interesting to see how they’ve managed to replicate the C-64’s original 12 sound channels, by having one musician assigned to each channel.
If you can’t catch the C64 Orchestra on tour, you can try and find their beautifully packaged Run 10 album. The limited release is a 2-CD set which includes original C-64 tracks, interviews, remixes, and more.
