Nintendo announced today that the company has now sold 4.7 million Virtual Console games worldwide. That means that, despite a downward sales trend in the first quarter, things are speeding up for the download service.
Since the numbers were last reported at the end of April to be 3.3 million, this means that, roughly, sales for the month of May alone were 1.4 million, which is more than double the number of VC games that Nintendo sold in an average month in Q1 (600,000).
My guess of course would be that this all has to do with the fact that they released Punch-Out and Actraiser. Sadly, Nintendo also today released a Top Five list of Virtual Console titles, which does not include either. In fact, you could probably just guess on your own. It’s after the jump.
- Super Mario Bros. (NES)
- Super Mario 64 (N64)
- Mario Kart 64 (N64)
- Super Mario World (SNES)
- The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Nintendo said this about Virtual Console today: “These games are nostalgic totems to veteran gamers, and simultaneously, new, easy-to-play entries for younger players. These games demonstrate Nintendo’s staying power across generations by letting veteran gamers relive their glory days while their children play them for the first time.”
Interesting way of looking at it. And probably true — these games have the same appeal to the very young ones as those Hannah Montana-branded plug-and-play joysticks. It’s the kids’ shallow end of the blue ocean! Bring your floaties.
