With all the jokes about OMG RARE! games on eBay that aren’t, and $13,000 bids for PlayStation 3 that are obviously not going to be paid up, it’s interesting to note auctions for stuff that’s really, truly rare and will easily fetch the absurd asking price.
So here’s one. A gold Nintendo World Championship cartridge. These contain the set of games that were used in the late-eighties competition. There are a little under a hundred grey cartridges that were used in the actual gameplay, which were sold by Nintendo Power a few years later. But the gold carts were the ones given out as prizes to the winners. There are maybe 26 of them, but only 10 of them (says the auctioneer) have been accounted for. One of them’s on eBay. Starting price: $15,000.
Thanks, Peter!
