It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that the Saturn and the Dreamcast are truly and officially dead. Granted, the consoles themselves hadn’t been made for years, but Sega was still repairing them both, as well as manufacturing the GD-Roms that were specific to Dreamcast games. No more. This offically kills off all the “Dreamcast isn’t really dead” rumors that persisted despite all evidence to the contrary.
Fortunately, there are still enough Dreamcasts kicking around so that if yours breaks, and Saturns are only slightly harder to find, but that solution won’t last forever. Also, the lack of GD-Roms means no more official Dreamcast games, from Sega or anyone else. There will still be homebrews, of course, but they’ll have to be on ordinary CD-Roms, which tend to break Dreamcasts. Greaaaat.
I’m one of those people who will always hold a special place in their heart for the Dreamcast. It was ahead of its time, and offered up some of the most satisfying and joyful gaming experiences I’ve ever seen. I shall wear my Dreamcast Arsenal soccer jersey today in loving tribute.
